The Department of Surgery Welcomes Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon Christopher Derby, MD

Christopher Derby, MD

The University of Arizona Department of Surgery at the College of Medicine – Tucson is pleased to welcome Christopher Derby, MD, as the newest member of the department faculty. Dr. Derby, a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon, joins the department as a clinical associate professor with the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Dr. Derby earned his undergraduate degree in ecology and evolutionary biology at Princeton University, followed by his medical degree at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor. He then completed two surgical residencies: one in general surgery at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, and the second in cardiothoracic surgery at Los Angeles County and University of Southern California Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he also completed a fellowship in pediatric cardiothoracic surgery.

Dr. Derby has been a practicing pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon for more than 15 years, including working for Banner at its Children’s Medical Center location in Mesa, Ariz. He most recently served as a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon at Nemours Cardiac Center at the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del. Prior to that, he was the director of pediatric and congenital cardiothoracic surgery at Janet Weis Children’s Hospital in Danville, Pa. Throughout his career, he has simultaneously held several educational and administrative leadership roles along with his clinical appointments. 

Congenital and adult acquired heart disease, Ross procedure in children and adults, and extracorporeal circulatory support are just a few of Dr. Derby’s many clinical and research interests. He has published numerous abstracts and manuscripts as well as extensively presented his research. Dr. Derby is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is also a member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and the Association of American Indian Physicians.
