Introducing the Innovations in Aging Podcast

Innovations in Aging

In the Innovations in Aging podcast series, Jon Kevan, MEd, and Lauren Erdelyi, MPH, CAPM, from University of Arizona Health Sciences Global and Online sit down with experts from across the University of Arizona to discuss the latest in how we can prepare to meet the needs of the growing population of older adults in the U.S. and around the world.

In the first episode, your hosts Jon and Lauren are joined by Dr. Linda Phillips, senior director of research and innovation at the Arizona Center on Aging and chair of the University of Arizona Innovations in Aging graduate program, to discuss topics ranging from youth culture and the retirement age to demographic changes and the impacts of the global pandemic on older adults.

“In the U.S. at least, we used to think of older adults as being non-Hispanic white folks, and as a result of that, we've designed our programs, our models, our ideas of how people age and what we should provide for them, around that particular group,” said Dr. Phillips. “By 2050, that group is going to be in the minority. We need to be looking at new models. Right now, we don't have enough effective ways of supporting the needs of an increasingly diverse population through the experience of aging.”
