Health Care and Education for Children with Autism in Kazakhstan: Comparison and Contrast

April is Autism Acceptance Month. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) refers to a group of complex neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by repetitive and characteristic patterns of behavior and difficulties with social communication and interaction. The symptoms of ASD are present from early childhood and affect daily functioning.

This presentation will highlight the status of health care, education and adaptation for children with autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders in Kazakhstan. Current challenges and further recommendations will also be discussed.

Larissa Yugay, MD, PhD, has a diverse background in work experience. She received her medical degree at Saint-Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University in Russia and completed the internship and residency training in Almaty, Kazakhstan, where she worked as a pediatric neurologist for 18 years. After completing her PhD for the thesis Prenosological Diagnostic Criteria of Cephalgia in School-aged Children, she began her teaching career working as an assistant professor of neurology at Kazakh - Russian Medical University. Currently she is working at the University of Arizona in the All of Us Research Program, started by the Precision Medicine Initiative and supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She was recently nominated for a graduating student award by the online Master of Public Health program at the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health. She has lived in Arizona for seven years.
