Enver Akalin, MD, FAST, FASN

Dr. Akalin earned his medical degree from Ege University School of Medicine in Izmir, Turkey. He completed a research fellowship in the Renal Division at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, followed by a clinical fellowship in the Renal Division at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Akalin then completed his residency in internal medicine and a clinical fellowship in transplant nephrology in the Renal Division at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta.

In 2000, Dr. Akalin joined the Mount Sinai School of Medicine faculty, where he served as medical director of the Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation Program until January 2009. He is the medical director of the Kidney Transplantation Program at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York, and serves as a professor of medicine and surgery.

Dr. Akalin’s research focuses on the mechanisms of allograft injury. He was the first investigator to apply microarray technology to kidney transplant recipients. He has participated in multiple NIH-funded studies and holds several active R01 and U01 grants. Dr. Akalin has served as site principal investigator for more than 30 multicenter clinical trials and has authored or co-authored over 160 original scientific articles, review papers and book chapters. He previously served on the editorial board of the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology and is an associate editor of Transplantation.

Dr. Akalin received the Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Transplantation in 1995 and 1996. He has chaired several national committees, including the American Society of Transplantation’s Transplantation and Immunology Research Network, the Clinical Science Grant Review Committee and the Transplant Nephrology Fellowship Accreditation Committee. He has also served on the Education Committee of The Transplantation Society and on the Medical Directors Forum of the American Society of Transplantation. Dr. Akalin was president of the New York Society of Nephrology during the 2016–2017 academic year and was invited as a distinguished visiting professor at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, in 2019. Dr. Akalin is a Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology and the American Society of Transplantation.
