With red envelopes in hand, 108 University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson fourth-year medical students counted down the seconds until 9 a.m. on March 17 when they joined soon-to-be residents across the country finding out where they would spend the next stage of their medical training.

The day is the culmination of four years of study, research and rotations and occurs on the third Friday in March nationwide.

From breakfast burritos, pastries and donuts to shooting sparklers and dance music, students, along with family, friends and faculty, celebrated the moment.

While 47 of the soon-to-be residents will remain in Arizona, matches were made at 57 different hospitals in 25 states.
