Future of Healthcare Panel Discussion To Focus on Pandemic

Forward-thinking health care providers and researchers will gather on April 29 for a panel discussion about lessons learned from the pandemic and how this knowledge can be used to build a healthier future.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on every aspect of society, particularly health care, is undeniable. The pandemic has revealed vulnerabilities in critical resource supplies, tested the limits of crisis response capabilities and made systemic health inequalities plainly clear. It also revealed the remarkable resilience of people and organizations, stimulated positive change and innovation, and focused the world on a common goal for the first time in decades, if not history.

Topics for discussion include COVID-19 infection and immunity research and ongoing efforts to vaccinate Arizona’s underserved populations. Allison Otu, MBA, executive director of corporate and community relations in the University of Arizona Health Sciences Office of Communications, will moderate the panel.

The panelists are:                    

• Deepta Bhattacharya, PhD, associate professor of immunobiology, UArizona College of Medicine – Tucson. Dr. Bhattacharya studies immune responses to infections and vaccines. Research co-led by Dr. Bhattacharya resulted in the development of a highly accurate test for SARS CoV-2 antibodies.
• Sarah Frost, MBA, CEO, Banner – University Medical Center Tucson and Banner – University Medical Center South
• Brian Hilligoss, PhD, associate professor and director of the Center for Management Innovations in Healthcare, UArizona Eller College of Management. Dr. Hilligoss does qualitative research in health care on topics of routines, coordination, sensemaking, high-reliability and organizational change.
• Cecilia Rosales, MD, MS, associate dean of community engagement and outreach – Phoenix programs, UArizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health. Dr. Rosales leads the Mobile Health Unit outreach programs, which work to improve public health by reaching out to underserved and Spanish-language communities in Maricopa and Pima counties.
