Dr. David Labiner to Receive Arizona Epilepsy Foundation Award
The UA Health Sciences faculty member, researcher and Banner physician will be honored during the foundation’s annual gala.

The Epilepsy Foundation Arizona will honor David Labiner, MD, Banner – University Medicine neurology physician and University of Arizona Health Sciences professor and chair of the Department of Neurology, during its 2019 Waves of Change for Epilepsy Gala.
The gala will be held Saturday, Sept. 28, from 6 – 10 p.m. at the Mountain Shadows Resort, 5445 E. Lincoln Dr., Paradise Valley.
During the gala, Dr. Labiner will be receive the 2019 Commitment to Epilepsy Award. The Epilepsy Foundation Arizona, a state chapter of the Epilepsy Foundation, provides information, training, seminars and support groups for individuals and their families who are affected by seizures. In addition, the Epilepsy Foundation Arizona offers a summer camp for children with epilepsy.
Epilepsy is the underlying tendency of the brain to produce sudden bursts of electrical energy that disrupts brain function. The disorder affects 3.4 million Americans of all ages and is the third-most common neurological disorder after Alzheimer's and stroke.
Dr. Labiner specializes in epilepsy and seizure disorders and sees patients at Banner – University Medical Center Tucson and South. In addition to caring for patients in Tucson, Dr. Labiner regularly holds UA epilepsy clinics throughout the state, including the Navajo Reservation.
During his travels he volunteers his time to speak to support groups in small towns and holds local conferences, where he presents the latest updates on epilepsy medical treatment.
“In Arizona 77,000 people have epilepsy and there are 150,000 new cases across the country each year,” Dr. Labiner said. “In fact, 1 in 26 individuals will develop epilepsy in their lifetime. The gala and the awards are one way the Epilepsy Foundation Arizona works to create awareness and raise funds to provide public education programs and improve the treatment of this disease. As a committed advocate of the foundation’s work, I am humbled.”
Dr. Labiner also will be lead the 2019 Tucson Epilepsy Seminar on Saturday, Oct. 5, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. in Kiewit Auditorium, UA Cancer Center, 1515 N. Campbell Ave., Tucson.
Dr. Labiner received his medical degree and completed his internship at the Medical College of Georgia. He completed a residency with the Department of Neurology at Columbia University in New York and a fellowship at Duke University. He is the past-president of the National Association of Epilepsy Centers, as well as a prior member of the board of directors of the Epilepsy Foundation America and the American Epilepsy Society. In addition, Dr. Labiner is professor of pharmacy practice and science at the UA College of Pharmacy.
