Dr. Christian Twiss Named President of AZ Urological Society

Christian O. Twiss, MD, FACS, a urology professor in the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson, has been elected president of the Arizona Urological Society (AZUS). His two-year term began in August.

“I am both honored and excited to lead this organization dedicated to the interests of all Arizona urologists,” Dr. Twiss said. “The majority of Arizona urologists are AZUS members, which gives us the potential to be the voice of all Arizona urologists.”

As president, he said he will “continue to consolidate our relationship with the Arizona Medical Association and to protect and promote the interests of urologists throughout the state in this challenging health care arena where we are facing increasing physician burnout, declining reimbursement and reduced patient access to care.”

Dr. Twiss is the director of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery in the Department of Urology. His current research focuses on the use of autograft for the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse as an alternative to the use of synthetic mesh, which often leads to postoperative complications. 

“We are also partnering with radiology on the use of dynamic pelvic MRI in the evaluation of pelvic floor disorders and continue to report on outcomes following vaginal mesh removal,” Dr. Twiss said.

Dr. Twiss is also the program director for the urology residency program. “I feel very fortunate to lead the expansion of our residency program and to be involved in the continued growth of our department. I am grateful for the community, camaraderie and mentorship I have had within our department and within the College of Medicine – Tucson.” 

After receiving his medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine in 2000, Dr. Twiss completed his residency training in surgery and urology. He completed a fellowship in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery, female urology and urodynamics at the University of California, Los Angeles.

AZUS is a professional association of urologic physicians. Its mission is to “provide educational activities which serve to maintain, develop and increase the knowledge and skills that urologists need to improve patient care.”
