CUP Program (Commitment to Underserved People)

Oct. 24, 2019

Medical students and physician volunteers are providing free medical care and education to underserved people in Southern Arizona.

Commitment to Underserved People (CUP) Clinics Program is a co-curricular club of the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson that provides care to the Tucson community under the supervision of volunteer attending physicians. Medical students coordinate and provide culturally appropriate preventive care, primary care, referrals, immunizations, psychiatric evaluations and diagnostic tests to patients who have no other source of health care.

CUP was created in 1979 by a small group of medical students under the encouragement of Steve Spencer, MD, a faculty member in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Dr. Spencer was a mentor for medical students who wanted their careers to include the care of the medically underserved. Founding students were particularly interested in being of service while still in medical school.

Services offered: Preventive care, primary care, referrals, diagnostic tests, immunizations, women’s health care, sports physicals, adult and pediatric immunizations, mental health services, patient education and assistance with AHCCCS if patient qualifies.
