Steven Lieberman receives NBME’s distinguished service award
Steven A. Lieberman, MD, a professor of internal medicine in the Division of Endocrinology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix, received the Edithe J. Levit Distinguished Service Award from the National Board of Medical Examiners. The award recognizes members who have provided invaluable service to NBME by serving on several committees over many years.
“It is humbling, as I have greatly admired the past recipients of the award that I have known and worked with,” said Lieberman. “It is especially meaningful coming from the NBME, which is an outstanding organization with an important mission, true-north principles and utmost integrity.”
Lieberman began working with the NBME in 2003 on the Physiology Committee. He served on that committee for nine years, including four years as chair. He also served 14 years on the Step 1 Interdisciplinary Review Committee, four years on the Step 1 Committee and four years on the United States Medical Licensing Examination Management Committee, as well as serving on a task force, an initiative and other committees.
Lieberman joined the College of Medicine – Phoenix in 2018. In addition to teaching endocrinology to second-year medical students in two of their foundational science blocks, he is also an advisor for the scholarly projects program, which involves reviewing students’ required research proposals, presentations, abstracts, posters and manuscripts.
“Other roles I currently have include teaching in small groups, interactive sessions related to endocrinology, clinical skills education in our doctoring courses for students in Years 1, 2 and our Pathway Scholars Program (a masters-level prematriculation program), mentoring student research projects, and serving on a variety of departmental, college and university committees and task forces. After serving in a variety of roles in deans’ offices over 21 years, I’m happy to help wherever asked to improve our student education program,” he said.
Lieberman said he enjoys the work he does at the college.
“Spending the past few years working with the staff and faculty in medical student education at the College of Medicine – Phoenix has been a fantastic experience!” he said. “Their professionalism, dedication and spirit never cease to amaze me.”
The NBME’s mission is to “protect the health of the public through state-of-the-art assessment of health professionals.”
The award is named for Edithe J. Levit, who served as NBME president from 1977 to 1986. NBME established a distinguished service award in 1983 and named it in her honor in 2007.
