Understanding PANS/PANDAS: Symptoms, diagnosis and treatment for rural physicians

Join us to learn to recognize and manage PANS/PANDAS, severe but highly treatable post-infectious inflammatory brain conditions that can include symptoms in children such as anxiety, irritability, hyperactivity, sleep disturbances, mood swings, eating disorders and urinary problems. Identifying PANS/PANDAS is important as studies indicate that, with proper treatment, symptoms can resolve or be dramatically reduced.

Outcome objectives

• Recognize PANS/PANDAS as a diagnostic possibility for young patients with sudden onset OCD or other related symptoms.
• Differentiate between PANS and PANDAS.
• Describe the initial workup of PANS/PANDAS.
• Administer appropriate first-line treatments to PANS/PANDAS patients.
• Effectively refer PANS/PANDAS patients to specialist care and coordinate care with these health care providers.
• Educate and counsel PANS/PANDAS patients and their families on care at home and at school.
