Physiology’s Monique Peña receives Wildcat award
Monique Peña, MEd, an academic advisor with the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson Department of Physiology, was selected as the Wildcat Achievement Award winner as part of the 2025 Student Success Awards.
The U of A Student Success and Retention Innovation award is given to someone who has shown a strong commitment to the university as well as student success and retention.

“This recognition means a great deal to me because it acknowledges my passion for the work I do,” said Peña, who advises about 400 students. “It’s always nice to be recognized, but it’s especially meaningful when it comes from those who understand the impact we make on students’ lives.”
Peña has been with the U of A for 15 years, spending the past 12 years in Physiology after previously working with undergraduate students in nursing and nutritional science programs. She said it’s incredibly rewarding to be part of the students’ collegiate journeys and see them reach their academic and personal goals.
“There’s nothing more fulfilling than helping a student navigate challenges and celebrating their successes,” she said.
Peña said her own undergraduate advisor, Nancy Rodriguez Lorta, senior director of advising and student services for the U of A College of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences, inspired her to pursue a career in academic advising.
“During some challenging times in my life, she was a consistent and friendly face on campus, offering support and guidance. I wanted to be able to give back in the same way,” Peña said.
In the nomination letter, Peña was credited with establishing and refining a strong orientation process for transfer students as well as creating partnerships for internships.
“She has been nothing but supportive to not only our advising team, but also to the many students she’s served during their time with us,” wrote Brian M. Pearse, MEd, a Department of Physiology academic advisor and recruitment coordinator for the U of A College of Medicine – Tucson, in his nomination letter.
Several students also offered support for Peña, including one who called her “the most influential person in my success during college. She has done everything and beyond I could imagine.”
Peña will be honored for her efforts during an awards event in September.
