The award is named for the late Ruhe, whose many contributions to medical education included the design and development of an accreditation system still in use for continuing medical education for physicians. It honors meritorious achievement and innovation in accredited continuing medical education, graduate medical education or other professional learning by an Arizona organization.
The department received the award on April 5 at the Arizona Medical Association’s annual meeting in Mesa.
“Throughout our department, our faculty and staff work diligently to bridge the educational gaps in mental health care through our numerous CME events,” said Jordan F. Karp, MD, chair of the Department of Psychiatry. “Looking back over the last five years, we are proud of the depth and breadth of topics our Grand Rounds series and conferences have covered. I am very excited to share that our CME programming has awarded close to 4,000 CME credits during this time. It shows our commitment to improving outcomes in physician competency and performance and for improving patient outcomes.”
The Department of Psychiatry’s efforts during and after the COVID-19 pandemic to provide conferences designed to help primary care physicians manage mental health conditions were highlighted during the award ceremony. Additionally, the department expanded its free continuing medical education offerings to include addiction medicine, perinatal psychiatry and behavioral sleep medicine seminars.
“It is a testament to the passion and dedication of our faculty in advancing the knowledge of and treatments for psychiatric disorders,” Karp said.
