Associate Vice President, Student Engagement and Career Advancement

Francisco A. Moreno, MD, is the associate vice president for student engagement and career advancement at the University of Arizona Health Sciences, where he is responsible for providing strategic leadership to advance the capacity of health professionals and health scientists to serve the needs of Arizona and beyond.  

Moreno works to promote collaboration and coordination of engagement and workforce development efforts among U of A Health Sciences’ colleges and centers, other university departments and external stakeholders. The engagement focus is to develop, implement and enhance high-impact programs and initiatives to promote student interest, preparation and success, reinforcing the U of A Health Sciences’ commitment to excellence and innovation along the continuum of trainee development and career advancement. 

A U of A faculty member since 1997, Moreno has served in a variety of roles at the Department of Psychiatry and the College of Medicine – Tucson related to academic administration; undergraduate, graduate and continuing medical education; faculty development; promotion; research administration; resource utilization; and community advocacy. Dr. Moreno continues to serve as professor of psychiatry at the U of A College of Medicine – Tucson and oversees important programs of research such as the National Institutes of Health-funded Precision Medicine Initiative’s All of Us Research Program and various clinical psychopharmacology research studies, including projects that explore the use of psychedelic compounds in difficult-to-treat conditions.

Originally from Mexico, Moreno received his medical degree from the University of Baja, California. He completed his psychiatry residency and research fellowship training in neuropsychopharmacology, as well as a career development program in quantitative genetics, at the U of A. He has conducted extensive research in the biology and treatment of mood and anxiety disorders. An expert psychopharmacologist, he is involved in clinical, educational and consultative activities in this area.
