Dr. Bellal Joseph President-Elect of College of Surgeons Chapter
Bellal A. Joseph, MD, FACS, College of Medicine – Tucson chief of the Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Burns, and Acute Care Surgery, has been named president-elect of the Arizona Chapter of the American College of Surgeons.

The Arizona Chapter of the American College of Surgeons was founded in 1952 and has grown to include more than 400 members. It strives to improve the standards of surgical care and medical education in the state of Arizona, enhance fellowship among surgeons, provide a forum for young surgeons and support the goals of the American College of Surgeons (ACS).
“This recognition is such an honor,” Dr. Joseph said. “I’m looking forward to working with the chapter to strengthen the diversity, equity and inclusion of our future members and leaders.”
Dr. Joseph is the Martin Gluck Endowed Professor of Surgery and holds an array of leadership positions including vice chairman of research in the Department of Surgery, director of the International Research Fellowship, associate director of the Surgical Critical Care/Acute Care Fellowship, medical director of the Southern Arizona Telemedicine and Telepresence (SATT) Program, associate director of Telesurgery at the Arizona Telemedicine Program, and director of outpatient clinics for trauma and emergency surgery.
“Dr. Joseph is a prolific researcher, mentor and leader whose guidance will help our local ACS chapter continue to grow,” said Geoffrey Gurtner, MD, chair of the Department of Surgery. “In countless ways, Dr. Joseph has demonstrated his deep commitment to improving access to health care throughout Arizona, and this appointment is a recognition of that service.”
Dr. Joseph has authored over 300 peer reviewed publications and more than 30 book chapters. His research has been funded by the National Institute on Aging, the Department of Defense and DARPA. His areas of expertise encompass traumatic brain injury, transfusions and factor replacement in trauma patients; frailty; and diversity, equity and inclusion.
Dr. Joseph is a member of several national associations. He is executive director of GeriTrac for the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, president of the Arizona Trauma Association, and vice chair of the Committee on Trauma in the State of Arizona. Dr. Joseph is also a member of the steering committee of the National Trauma Research Action Plan (NTRAP). His passion lies in nurturing the professional development and growth of aspiring young surgeons.
