In late September, faculty, staff and residents from the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson Department of Emergency Medicine stepped up to help the Tucson community by building houses with Habitat for Humanity Tucson.

The volunteer event was part of the EM Day of Service, organized by the Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association (EMRA), a national organization dedicated to supporting emergency medicine physicians-in-training.

“While we, as residents, serve our community daily in the emergency department, EM Day of Service is an important part of our development as physicians because it gives us an opportunity to learn from our community,” said Veronica Cheng, a first-year resident and member of the EMRA’s Leadership Academy. “EM Day of Service is an opportunity for us to cultivate the humanity and compassion that is a core part of our calling as physicians.”

The organization encourages all emergency medical providers, not just residents, to take part in the EM Day of Service.
