Introducing the Second Cohort of PCP Scholarship Recipients
The second cohort of recipients of the University of Arizona Health Sciences Primary Care Physician Scholarship (PCP) has been named. The group includes out-of-state students for the first time, who along with in-state students will help the state recoup its investment in the next generation of PCPs by keeping them in Arizona to practice medicine in the communities that need them most. Eleven of the new scholarship recipients are from the College of Medicine – Phoenix and 20 are from the College of Medicine – Tucson. They have a variety of experiences and backgrounds, but share a deep compassion for patients and enthusiasm to serve them. Watch them share their testimonials in this video.
The scholarship was launched in January 2020 as a bold move toward addressing the growing burden of medical student debt, as well as Arizona’s primary care provider shortage, which is most deeply felt in rural and urban underserved areas. The scholarship covers tuition for students at the Tucson and Phoenix Colleges of Medicine, who must commit to practicing primary care or another designated critical-access specialty in an underserved community in Arizona for up to four years. Tomorrow’s physicians can practice medicine without the burden of medical-school debt, and rural and other underserved Arizonans will benefit from increased access to PCPs in the coming years.
