Policymakers, experts to meet in Phoenix for Valley fever workshop

National and state public health policymakers and experts will meet Nov. 3 in Phoenix to address the emerging public health problem of Valley fever, also known as coccidioidomycosis.

The University of Arizona Health Sciences is hosting the half-day event, “Western Regional Valley Fever Workshop: Emerging public health problem and mitigation strategies.” The free event will include presentations and a panel discussion about risk mitigation, vaccines, policy measures, strategies for cooperation among Western states and more.

Highlights include a welcome and opening remarks by Valley Fever Collaborative founder John Galgiani, MD, director of the Valley Fever Center for Excellence and professor of internal medicine in the UArizona College of Medicine – Tucson, and the Farness Lecture, “Reflections on vaccine development in the age of emerging infections,” by Thomas Monath, MD, FASTMH, managing partner and chief scientific officer at Crozet BioPharma.

The program includes three sessions with presentations targeted toward legislators, public health experts, administrators, regulators, providers, and others interested in Valley fever policies and mitigation strategies. Each session will feature two presentations by national Valley fever experts with time for questions from the audience.

The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion focused on next steps moderated by George Rutherford, III, MD, professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco. The day will conclude with a networking reception.
