Five UArizona Health Sciences Students Awarded Quidel Global Health Scholarships

Five students pursuing doctoral and professional degrees in medicine, nursing, pharmacology and public health at the University of Arizona Health Sciences were awarded Quidel Global Health Scholarships to help fund their advanced education.

The scholarship recipients are: Ahamed Ashraf from the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health; Eddie Vargas from the College of Medicine – Tucson; Anela Tamashiro from the College of Nursing; Derrick (Tochukwu) Nwobodo from the R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy and Santana Solomon from the College of Medicine – Phoenix.

Quidel, a subsidiary of QuidelOrtho Corporation, is a leading provider of rapid diagnostic testing solutions, cellular-based virology assays and molecular diagnostic systems. Quidel Global Health Scholarships are intended to prepare students to build and lead the future of health care to enhance the well-being of people around the globe.

“The students selected to receive these scholarships are exemplary in their commitment to improving the health and resilience of populations around the world,” said Michael D. Dake, MD, senior vice president for UArizona Health Sciences. “Access to care is more important than ever, and this gift allows more students to have access to careers in health and impact the world at large.”

The deans of each college established the selection criteria, which included a recognition of diverse talents, experiences and perspectives that will help enhance the health and well-being of people around the globe. The scholarships range from $11,000 to $12,500 annually and are renewable for three or four years, depending on the college.

Quidel committed $1 million for scholarships to support tomorrow's scientists and health professionals. The gift was split between UArizona Health Sciences and the BIO5 Institute’s KEYS Research Program.
