Study shows how morphine may contribute to bone loss and cancer-induced bone pain

A study published in the journal PAIN is the first to show how morphine interacts with toll-like receptor 4 to contribute to pain evolution and bone loss.

On the left, cells isolated from breast cancer cells were treated with RANKL, a growth factor that stimulates bone resorption, to produce osteoclasts (pink). When morphine was added to the cell culture (right), the number of osteoclasts increased, suggesting that morphine stimulated osteoclast production.

Center receives $7.8M NIH grant to address environmental health challenges

The funding will allow the Southwest Environmental Health Sciences Center to continue research efforts focusing on environmental and health challenges in arid lands, including the Southwest.

SWEHSC research led by Karletta Chief, PhD, involves assessing short-term exposures and risk perceptions on the Navajo Nation following the catastrophic Gold King Mine spill in 2015.

A study found racial and ethnic differences in the suicide prevention care provided to patients with alcohol use disorder at U.S. emergency departments.

A study led by researchers in the College of Medicine – Tucson’s Department of Family and Community Medicine found that suicide prevention care administered at emergency departments varied by race or ethnicity among people with alcohol use disorder.

Arizona Area Health Education Center welcomes CERE as Regional AHEC Center

The Center for Excellence in Rural Education will support health care and health education in the eastern Arizona counties of Gila, Graham and Greenlee.

Academic-community educational partnerships like the one between the Arizona Area Health Education Center Program and the Center for Excellence in Rural Education aim to improve the supply and distribution of health care professionals in rural areas. The AzAHEC-CERE partnership will serve Gila, Graham and Greenlee counties, which are home to many small towns including Payson, Arizona (pictured).
