Since joining the College of Medicine – Phoenix as a founding faculty member in 2006, Ronald P. Hammer, Jr., PhD, has been instrumental in building the college, having served as a distinguished educator, a renowned researcher and a respected leader. After 18 years of service, he will retire on Dec. 31, 2024.
Hammer helped develop the preclinical curriculum for the college and brought the first PhD graduate program to Phoenix. In 2015, he proposed and was appointed director of the college’s Graduate Training Office to support graduate students and develop graduate programs on campus. Among Hammer's many accomplishments, the Clinical Translational Sciences graduate program is now the largest biomedical PhD program in the colleges of medicine.
Hammer helped nurture the college’s dynamic learning environment that advances evidence-based care. His laboratory was continuously funded by NIH grants from 1985-2015. Throughout his tenure, he has been committed to mentoring the academic progress and well-being of graduate and undergraduate students.
Hammer also served on numerous review, search and university committees, including the University AP&T Committee, Faculty Senate, co-chair of the Institutional Review Committee and faculty co-director of the MENTOR Institute.
