What began with two friends’ mutual passion for Tai Chi has become a collaboration between the University of Arizona and Beijing Normal University that will facilitate worldwide research of the benefits of Chinese health practices and the complementary use of Eastern and Western medicine on a global scale.

Changing the major’s name to Physiology and Medical Sciences and revising graduation requirements will give students an appreciation for the diversity of disciplines and careers supported by a foundation in physiology.

Fifty high school students from 22 Arizona communities — Chinle, Douglas, Flagstaff, Fort Apache, Gilbert, Glendale, Green Valley, Laveen, Maricopa, Nogales, Paradise Valley, Phoenix, Rio Rico, San Luis, Second Mesa, Somerton, Tuba City, Tucson, Whiteriver, Willcox, Winslow and Yuma — are encouraged to pursue health-care careers through hands-on experience in the Med-Start academic-enrichment summer program.

The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson has received an $8.8 million gift from the estate of Dr. Ronald K. Baker, a 1975 alumnus of the college, including the largest endowed scholarship gift ever received by the college.
