On March 11, Psychiatry for Non-Psychiatrists, hosted by the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson with support from Banner – University Health Plans, will provide training in behavioral health strategies that can be implemented in any health care setting.

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, mental illnesses were rising at an alarming rate. It has only gotten worse. With a dearth of mental health care providers, primary care providers are increasingly confronted with patients who are struggling with behavioral health conditions such as depression, anxiety, chronic pain and trauma.

The primary goal of Psychiatry for Non-Psychiatrists is to improve patient outcomes by sharing knowledge with primary care providers and others who are interested in common mental health concerns that they or those they know may be struggling with.

“Access to mental health care is a right, not a privilege,” said Jordan F. Karp, MD, professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry and lead conference organizer. Dr. Karp provides specialized care for mood and anxiety disorders, suicide prevention, treatment-resistant depression, cognitive decline and behavioral changes associated with aging.

“We aim to empower primary care providers with new clinical skills to enhance access to care, improve comorbid medical conditions, and reduce the stigma of seeking treatment for mental illness,” he said.
