Show Us Your Favorite Places on the Health Sciences Campuses
The Health Sciences Innovation Building is filled with cool and creative spaces to study, or just hang around – like this student on the sixth-floor open-air balcony where there are two hanging wicker chairs.
Some of us have been away from campus for almost 18 months. Some of us are new to the University of Arizona Health Sciences community – hired as faculty or staff during the pandemic and never on campus until the past few weeks. And then there are students, new as well as returning, who are back filling classrooms, corridors and outdoor spaces with sound and motion.
While being around people again is a welcome change, it’s also nice to know there are special places around our campuses where you can go to be alone and study, hang out with a few friends or just simply relax.
This gallery includes some of the Health Sciences Connect team’s favorite spaces, and we invite you to share photos of your favorite Health Sciences campus spaces with us on social media. We welcome photo submissions from both the Tucson and Phoenix area campuses. The photos can be selfies, or simply the view from your favorite perch. They can be inside, or outside. Be sure to tell us where the place is on campus, and why you like it.
We’ll select our favorite photos from the submissions and create a gallery to be published in the coming weeks. So take out your phone and share your favorite spaces with 5,000 of your closest friends in the Health Sciences community.
Sometimes a favorite place can be right in the middle of the action, like these shaded benches on the Tucson campus, flanked by a walking path on one side and a bike path on the other between Drachman Hall and the Medical Research Building.
While there is only one pea in this pod, there are several pods available on the third floor of the Health Sciences Library on the Tucson campus, where a comfortable seat, desktop and footstool make for a semi-private space to study, or just catch up on social media.
The shade cast in the canyon between the Biomedical Sciences Partnership Building and the Health Sciences Education Building on the Phoenix Biomedical Campus makes this a favorite place for people to congregate on all but the hottest of days.
A patch of shade and the sound of running water make the courtyard at the College of Nursing a favorite place for people to get outside, even in the summer.
This lofty perch in the Health Sciences Innovation Building is a favorite for those who want to have a birds-eye view of the Tucson campus in a space with a towering ceiling and air conditioning.
This second-floor balcony in the Health Sciences Education Building on the Phoenix Biomedical Campus offers artificial grass, shade and chairs big enough to sit cross-legged for those wanting a change of scenery.
If the plaza between the College of Pharmacy and the Sarver Heart Center is good enough for Hippocrates to hang out, surely it’s good enough to be one of your favorite spaces as well.
This beautiful tree-covered courtyard sits just east of BIO5 and south of Drachman Hall on the Tucson campus. It’s a favorite for outside lunches or meetings, with its tables, chairs and shade.
Fancy some exercise on a stationary bike while you study between classes? If you said yes, then head on over to the Health Sciences Library on the Tucson campus where a couple of exercise bikes are tucked under a staircase. The bikes have trays for books or laptops, so you can work while you ride.
This cozy nook in the Health Sciences Education Building on the Phoenix Biomedical Campus doubles as an art exhibitions space.
This fourth floor, open-air porch is in the southeast corner of the Health Sciences Innovation Building. Yes, that is artificial grass underfoot, so don’t be surprised if you see someone sprawled out taking a quick nap between classes or meetings.
The eastern stairway between the fourth and sixth floors in the Health Sciences Innovation Building has a built-in seating areas with a view. Each padded seating area is also equipped with electrical outlets.
The western porch along the ground-floor of Drachman Hall has several tables and chairs tucked in the shade of the building. You have a good view of the busy bike- and pedestrian-ways that pass through the Tucson campus from here.
The courtyard between BIO5 and the Bioscience Research Laboratories on the Tucson campus is a favorite place for many people to stop and enjoy food and drink after visiting the nearby Catalyst Café.
If you are looking for a space that gives you a different perspective, you have to look down as you pass along the east side of the Skaggs Pharmaceutical Sciences Building. It is one of the only subterranean open-air spaces with tables and chairs that we’re aware of on the Tucson campus.
Lounge chairs are available for those who find their way to this unusual open-air balcony on the fourth floor of the Health Sciences Innovation Building. This north and east facing balcony’s roof is three-stories up and has tables and chairs.
If right angles aren’t your thing, you may find the sweeping curves of the Medical Research Building’s balcony on the Tucson campus to your liking. You’ll be able to watch the clouds drift by through the white metal and shade-sail structure over the courtyard.
Whether eating alone or with friends, this second-floor dining area in the Health Sciences Education Building on the Phoenix Biomedical Campus offers art, modern décor and natural light.
