Nathaniel Soper, MD, leads the Department of Surgery as The Jean and Harlan Stone Endowed Chair of Surgery. His career is significant for trailblazing the field of minimally invasive surgery, foregut surgery and surgical education. As one of the first academic surgeons performing laparoscopic surgery both nationally and internationally, he now continues to be involved in the early clinical experience with Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery. 

Soper is dedicated to innovation and educations with more than 200 manuscripts, 17 edited books and 100 edited chapters published to his credit. He earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa School of Medicine, then competed General Surgery residency with a year of laboratory investigation at the University of Utah Hospitals in Salt Lake City, UT. He also spent two years as a National Institutes of Health funded fellow at the Digestive Disease Center at the May Clinic in Rochester, MN. Previously, Dr. Soper served as Program Director for the General Surgery Residency and then for 12 years as Chair of the Department of Surgery at Northwestern University and Surgeon-in-Chief at Northwestern memorial Hospital.
