Rajat Madan, MD, PhD

Dr. Madan is chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases and a professor of medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson. He is a physician-scientist specializing in infectious diseases, immunology and translational research focused on host immune responses to infection. Dr. Madan earned his MD/MBBS from Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and completed a doctorate in molecular and developmental biology and immunology at the University of Cincinnati. He completed residency training in internal medicine at the University of Cincinnati/The Christ Hospital program and fellowship training in infectious diseases at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Prior to joining the University of Arizona in 2026, he served on the faculty at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and as an attending physician at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center. His research focuses on identifying host genetic and immune pathways that influence infectious disease outcomes, particularly in Clostridioides difficile infection. His laboratory studies inflammatory signaling, neutrophil biology, cytokine responses and metabolic factors that contribute to tissue injury and disease severity, with the goal of developing novel host-targeted therapies for infectious diseases.
