Geoffrey C. Gurtner, MD, FACS
Dr. Gurtner is chair of the Department of Surgery and a professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Arizona. A distinguished general and plastic surgeon, Dr. Gurtner previously held the Johnson & Johnson Distinguished Professorship at Stanford University in Surgery, Bioengineering and Materials Science.
He has authored more than 400 peer-reviewed publications and serves as eEditor for the leading textbooks "Grabb & Smith’s Plastic Surgery" and "Plastic Surgery." Dr. Gurtner’s NIH- and DOD-funded research focuses on how physical stimuli influence the human response to injury, with over $30 million in funding supporting his lab. He holds more than 50 patents and has more than 100 patent applications. His research has resulted in the development of multiple biomedical technologies.
He is a serial entrepreneur, having founded several venture-backed companies, including Neodyne Biosciences and Arresto Biosciences (acquired by Gilead). He also co-founded Tautona Group, a life-science fund that has commercialized technologies acquired by companies such as Allergan, Novadaq and Acelity/KCI. Dr. Gurtner has received numerous accolades, including the James Barrett Brown Award (2009, 2010) and researcher of the year honors from ASPS, AAPS and other leading organizations.
