Presenter Details

Dr. Karl B. Kern, MD

Dr. Kern is a professor emeritus of medicine at the University of Arizona, where he most recently held the prestigious Gordon A. Ewy, MD, Distinguished Endowed Chair of Cardiovascular Medicine. From 2010 to 2018, he served as co-director of the Sarver Heart Center, helping to advance cardiovascular care and research.

Dr. Kern earned his undergraduate degree magna cum laude from Brigham Young University and graduated with honors (Alpha Omega Alpha) from Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia in 1980. He completed his postgraduate training, including his cardiology fellowship, at the University of Arizona, joining the College of Medicine faculty in 1985.

An interventional cardiologist by training, Dr. Kern retired from clinical practice in July 2022. He was named to the “Best Doctors in America” list for 27 consecutive years (1996–2023). His leadership in resuscitation science is nationally recognized. He served on the American Heart Association National ACLS Subcommittee from 1994 to 2002, including three years as chair, during which the influential “Guidelines 2000 for CPR and ECC” were developed and published.

Dr. Kern also served as chair of the AHA’s Cardiopulmonary, Peri-Operative and Critical Care Council (2011–2013) and as chair of the AHA Emergency Cardiovascular Care Committee (2017–2019). Most recently, he led the AHA Oversight Committee for the Arrhythmia and Sudden Cardiac Death Strategic Network.

Dr. Kern, a pioneer in cardiopulmonary resuscitation research since 1983, was the coordinator of the University of Arizona/Sarver Heart Center Resuscitation Research Group. He served as principal investigator of the PEARL Study (2020), a pilot randomized controlled trial exploring early coronary angiography in post-arrest patients without ST-elevation on ECG. Dr. Kern has authored more than 300 scientific publications, with the majority focused on resuscitation science. His distinguished contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Drexel University College of Medicine Alumni Association (2014), Honorary Membership in the European Resuscitation Council and designation as an AHA/ILCOR “CPR Giant” in 2015.
