Event Description

The Gold Humanism Honor Society is excited to invite you to Solidarity Week, taking place Feb. 9-13. This annual celebration highlights compassion, empathy and humanism in medicine. We’ve planned a full week of meaningful and fun daily events to bring those values to life.

Throughout Solidarity Week, you’ll have opportunities to engage in patient-centered activities, hear from guest speakers, give back through volunteer events and even make Valentine’s Day cards for our pediatric patients. Each day includes opportunities to earn CUP hours, so be sure to check out what’s planned and sign up below.

Solidarity Week - Additional Information 

Mon, Feb. 9 — “Food as Medicine” culinary experience

Time: Noon to 1 p.m.

Location: Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine, Cantor Building kitchen, 1502 E. Mabel St., Tucson, AZ 85719

Description: Come join us for a session focused on how food is integral to our health and how healthy eating is compassionate medicine. This culinary experience will be led by Mari Ricker, MD, and Patricia Lebensohn, MD, and includes a hands-on experience making overnight Chia oats and protein balls. Attendance is limited to 20 students.

CUP hours for COM-T medical students: Earn 1 CUP hour for each short, reader-friendly healthy recipe made. Please include nutritional fun facts on the recipe sheets to then distribute to patients. See sign-up form for more details. (Max 2 hours)

Tue, Feb. 10 — Humanism in medicine talk with guest speaker Alok Patel, MD

Time: Noon to 1 p.m.

Location: DuVal Auditorium, 1501 N. Campbell Ave., Tucson, AZ 85724

Description: Join us for a humanism in medicine talk with Alok Patel, MD, a distinguished U of A-COM-T alumnus, GHHS member and current faculty member at Stanford Medicine as a board-certified pediatrician. We are honored to have him here sharing his insights on humanism in medicine. The talk will be followed by lunch and time to connect with your fellow medical colleagues and Dr. Patel.

Wed, Feb. 11 — Have a Heart, Give a Heart

Time: Supplies will be available all day.

Location: College of Medicine – Tucson Medical Student Lounge, 1501 N. Campbell Ave., Tucson, AZ 85724

Description: Make get-well-soon cards for our kiddos in the hospital. Supplies will be available in the student lounge.

CUP hours for COM-T medical students: Earn one hour for making four cards. (Max 1 hour) 

Thursday, Feb. 12 — Harm reduction event

Time: Noon to 1 p.m.

Location: College of Medicine –Tucson, Room 3114, 1501 N. Campbell Ave., Tucson, AZ 85724

Description: Make harm-reduction kits for Sonoran Prevention Works. We’ll discuss the importance of harm-reduction practices and spend time making harm-reduction kits, which will be donated to Sonoran Prevention Works.

Friday, Feb. 13 — “Celebration of Health” carnival and farmers market

Time: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Location: College of Medicine – Tucson, main plaza, 1501 N. Campbell Ave., Tucson, AZ 85724

Description: Join us for our biweekly farmers market with the addition of a carnival consisting of booths from various community and university partners celebrating compassionate medicine and patient care. There will also be a performance by our own Docapella.
