Learn about substance use disorders prevalence in American Indian/Native American populations along with a variety of treatment options.

Presenter Details

Joseph Mega, MD, MPH
Family Medicine Specialist
Whiteriver Indian Health Services

Mega is a board-certified physician in family medicine and addiction medicine. In 2014, he completed his residency in family medicine at the Contra Costa Family Medicine Program in Northern California. He subsequently worked full time in the ER at the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center and helped to pilot a novel California Bridge program that deployed substance use navigators to help patients in the ER address needs related to substance use. In 2021 he joined the Whiteriver Indian Health Service hospital in Whiteriver, Arizona, serving the White Mountain Apache Tribe. He currently works in the ER at Whiteriver and started a weekly Bridge clinic, which addresses the needs of patients with substance use disorders. 

Outcome Objectives

  • Understand the prevalence of substance use disorders in American Indian/Native American populations.
  • List two ways to expand options for treating substance use disorders in primary care.
  • Explain office-based medication assisted treatment for opioid use disorder and tobacco use disorder.
  • Explain medication assisted treatment and treatment options for alcohol use disorder and other substance use disorders.
