Event Description
Peter Valen, MD, will be presenting at Rheumatology Grand Rounds on Friday, March 27. Dr. Valen recently retired from the rheumatology section at the VA in Minneapolis and continues to do teaching in rheumatology. The title of the presentation is "Calcium Crystals and Arthritis.”
Learning Objectives: Participants should be able to:
- Recognize the various clinical presentations of CPPD and BCP crystal-related arthritis
- Recognize the challenges in diagnosis of calcium crystal-related arthritis
- Summarize the pathogenesis and management of calcium crystal-related arthritis
- Summarize the relationship between calcium crystals and osteoarthritis

Presenter Details
Peter Valen, MD
Dr. Valen graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School and completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He completed his rheumatology fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
He served for eight years in the Air Force Medical Corp. and was chief of rheumatology at Keesler Air Force Medical Center. From 1989 to 2007, he was a staff rheumatologist at the Gundersen Clinic in La Crosse, Wisconsin. From 2007 to 2013, he was a staff rheumatologist and associate professor of medicine at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. From 2014 to 2024, he was a staff rheumatologist at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center and an associate professor of medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School.
Dr. Valen was the principle investigator in numerous clinical trials of novel anti-rheumatic drugs. His primary clinical interest was in crystalline arthritis.
