2024 One Health Keynote: "Aquaporin Water Channels and One Health"
Featuring Nobel Laureate Peter Agre, MD
Sponsored by the University of Arizona Health Sciences One Health initiative
Join us on Monday, February 12, as we welcome Nobel Laureate Peter Agre, MD, the Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public Health, to the University of Arizona Health Sciences. Dr. Agre will present a keynote lecture, “Aquaporin Water Channels and One Health.”
Water is essential for life. Approximately 60% of human body mass is water, a phenomenon shared by all forms of life. Body functions such as concentration of urine, humidification of airways, salivation, release of cerebrospinal fluid, tears, sweat, semen, amniotic fluid and lactation all require movements of water across the cell membranes of certain tissues through a plumbing system for cells – the aquaporin water channel proteins. Dr. Agre will discuss aquaporins in humans and other organisms, including insects, microorganisms, parasites and plants, both in health and disease.
Prior to the keynote session, a team from Ending Pandemics will discuss systems to find, verify and contain outbreaks during “From Pixels to Public Health: Pioneering One Health Disease Surveillance.”
One Health is an approach that recognizes the interconnections in health and wellness among people, animals, plants and our shared environment. It integrates expertise in human, animal and environmental health to improve health outcomes, better respond to public health challenges, assure safe and healthy food and water, and protect global health security.
