Alexander B. Niculescu, MD, PhD, MBA, will join the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix as a professor of psychiatry. His recruitment was made possible by a generous award to the college from the Flinn Foundation, and was conducted in collaboration with the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center.
An internationally renowned, award-winning psychiatrist, scientist, educator and entrepreneur, Niculescu has done pioneering work in the field of precision psychiatry. In particular, his research in the development of blood tests in psychiatric disorders has been groundbreaking.
Among his many accolades, Niculescu was recognized with the Theodore Reich Award from the International Society for Psychiatric Genetics in 2007; the National Institutes of Health Directors’ New Innovator Award in 2010; and the Indiana University Trustee’s Teaching Award in 2019.
A firm believer in approaching patient care in a personalized fashion, utilizing biomarker and neuropsychological testing, Niculescu has dedicated his career to the improved understanding, treatment and prevention of mental health issues.
Niculescu joins the College of Medicine – Phoenix from Indiana University School of Medicine. He received his medical degree from Carol Davila School of Medicine in Bucharest, Romania, and his doctorate from the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California. He completed his psychiatry residency and fellowship training in biological psychiatry and neuroscience at the University of California, San Diego.
Niculescu’s recruitment is a significant step in the evolution of the Department of Psychiatry as a national destination for cutting-edge research on the causes and treatments of mental illness.
