College of Medicine - Phoenix's Mary Connell, MD, passes away

Today

Mary Connell, MD, one of the founding and most committed educators at the U of A College of Medicine – Phoenix, passed away on July 1 after a valiant battle with ovarian cancer.

Dr. Connell was the radiology director at the College of Medicine – Phoenix for more than 15 years and served as a radiologist at Valleywise Health Medical Center, attending to the needs of her community.

As an educator, she actively participated in curricular committees and delivered sessions for years 1-4 at the  College of Medicine – Phoenix, ensuring  students had access to Valleywise radiology rotations. Despite external growing demands, her commitment to the college never wavered.

Learners and colleagues were inspired by Dr. Connell and considered it a privilege to train under her. She motivated many students to enter into the specialty of radiology and played a pivotal role in their development through residency rotations at Valleywise. We are grateful for Dr. Connell's many years of dedicated service to the college.

Dr. Connell received her medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine and had been practicing medicine for more than 35 years. After earning her medical degree, she moved to Phoenix for residency and internship at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center.

We will share information about the family's wishes and an upcoming celebration of life when it becomes available.
