A new scholarship program provides medical students with free tuition in exchange for practicing primary care in an underserved community in Arizona.

University of Arizona undergraduate Mikayla Campagne is part of a research team examining the link between antibiotics and the increased risk of tendinitis and Achilles tendon ruptures. Their work will help clinicians identify weak points in the tendons to prevent future injuries.

The University of Arizona is now a top producer of Fulbright students, reports the Institute of Higher Education, ranking it No. 14 among U.S. research institutions and setting a university record with 20 awardees. Of those, five are from the UArizona Health Sciences, including three from the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health. They join two faculty members named Fulbright Scholars.

A team of researchers from three University of Arizona colleges, including Dr. Esther Sternberg with the UArizona College of Medicine – Tucson, is developing new methods to collect and analyze sweat for clues about how the body is functioning.

Researchers from the UArizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health have received a $1.5 million grant from FEMA to lead a study of occupational exposures to certain chemicals among firefighters.

The University of Arizona researchers — Drs. Rajesh Khanna, Jordan Lancaster, Jim Schweigerling and Joseph Valacich — are being recognized in areas that include pain therapeutics, heart disease treatment, optical science and online data collection. Two are from the UArizona Health Sciences colleges.
