Under the warm Arizona sun as their eager family and friends watched, fourth-year medical students from the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson and the College of Medicine – Phoenix learned where they’ll be spending the next phase of their training.

As is tradition on the third Friday of March, graduating medical students across the United States celebrate Match Day. At 9 a.m. Tucson time, the Class of 2026 simultaneously ripped open the envelopes that revealed their future. With the bubbling fountain in front of Old Main as the backdrop, 119 medical students in the U of A College of Medicine – Tucson discovered where they’ll start their careers as physicians. Further north, 107 U of A College of Medicine – Phoenix students clustered under the palo verde trees in front of the Biomedical Sciences Partnership Building to find out the next stops on their journeys to becoming physicians.

Match Day is the culmination of a lengthy process in which students and residency program directors submit their choices to the National Resident Matching Program, which uses a computerized algorithm to make the best pairings for graduates-to-be and programs. Residency programs, which range from three to seven years, represent a critical phase in graduate medical education in which new doctors practice in their chosen specialties under the supervision of experienced physicians.

While students from both colleges matched at different training centers across the country, 43% of College of Medicine – Tucson students and nearly 30% of College of Medicine – Phoenix students will remain in Arizona for their residency training.
