Geoffrey D. Rubin, MD, MBA, a professor and chair of the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson, received the Society for Advanced Body Imaging’s highest honor, the 2025 Gold Medal.

Internationally recognized as a pioneering physician scientist, Rubin’s groundbreaking work helped revolutionize vascular and cardiovascular care by advancing CT angiography as a noninvasive alternative to catheter angiography. His innovations in image visualization and automated detection techniques have become foundational in modern radiologic practice.

Since 2020, Rubin has led the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences. He is also the service chief of medical imaging at Banner – University Medicine Center Tucson.

Rubin has authored over 300 publications, holds six U.S. patents and is the principal investigator on research projects that have received more than $12 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health. His current research, supported by a $2.4 million National Cancer Institute grant, explores the use of artificial intelligence in medical imaging. He is investigating the use of machine learning on large data sets, with the goal of enhancing the interpretation of data to help radiologists operate more effectively.

Last year, Rubin was honored with the Association of Academic Radiology’s Gold Medal Award for his distinguished contributions to the association, academic radiology and the field of radiology.
