Michael D.L. Johnson, PhD, is an associate professor at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson Department of Immunobiology and an associate dean for basic science research and graduate studies at the college.

Michael D.L. Johnson, PhD, was named the 2026 American Society for Microbiology Honorary Diversity Lecturer.

The award honors a microbiologist who brings valuable and diverse perspectives and experiences to microbial sciences and is also an accomplished researcher with a proven record of delivering engaging and high-impact lectures.

Johnson, an associate professor at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson Department of Immunobiology and an associate dean for basic science research and graduate studies at the College of Medicine – Tucson, said the award was a complete shock to him because he was unaware he was even nominated. Johnson said it was an honor to receive the same award that his mentors also received.

“I am really honored,” said Johnson, who is also a member of the BIO5 Institute. “I got into this field to make a positive impact on science. Along the way, I realized that I could do that both inside and outside of the lab.”

This is the second time in five years that Johnson is being honored by the American Society for Microbiology, one of the largest professional societies dedicated to the life sciences, with more than 37,000 scientists and health practitioners. The mission of the society is to promote and advance the microbial sciences. The awards acknowledge leading scientists and researchers for their professional accomplishments and contributions to research, education and leadership.

Johnson will be recognized and deliver a presentation at the society’s Microbe meeting in June in Washington, D.C.
