Dr. Abecassis is the J. Roscoe Miller Distinguished Professor of Surgery and Microbiology-Immunology at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. He also is chief of the Division of Organ Transplantation and founding director of the Comprehensive Transplant Center.

The six-week academic enrichment program at the University of Arizona Health Sciences hosted 50 high school students from 22 Arizona communities this summer in an intensive exploration of health professions careers that will impact the health and lives of others.

For the second year in a row, Banner – University Medicine will provide each new medical student at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson a stethoscope. The gift of 120 stethoscopes is valued at $20,500.

As a symbol of their acceptance into medical school, new medical students will receive and don their first white coats at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson White Coat Ceremony. The incoming class of students includes a former UA football player, a navy dive medic, twin brothers, a former teacher and a former doula and birth coach.

What began with two friends’ mutual passion for Tai Chi has become a collaboration between the University of Arizona and Beijing Normal University that will facilitate worldwide research of the benefits of Chinese health practices and the complementary use of Eastern and Western medicine on a global scale.

Drs. Sheila M. Gerhart and Ruth E. Taylor-Piliae will be welcomed into the academy during its annual policy conference in Washington, D.C.

Changing the major’s name to Physiology and Medical Sciences and revising graduation requirements will give students an appreciation for the diversity of disciplines and careers supported by a foundation in physiology.

Fifty high school students from 22 Arizona communities — Chinle, Douglas, Flagstaff, Fort Apache, Gilbert, Glendale, Green Valley, Laveen, Maricopa, Nogales, Paradise Valley, Phoenix, Rio Rico, San Luis, Second Mesa, Somerton, Tuba City, Tucson, Whiteriver, Willcox, Winslow and Yuma — are encouraged to pursue health-care careers through hands-on experience in the Med-Start academic-enrichment summer program.

Dr. Cance will oversee clinical operations and research, while leading the UA Cancer Center’s efforts to renew its NCI Cancer Center Support Grant in 2020.
