Putting freedom of expression into practice on campus: Conversation series

The Office of the Provost invites you to a conversation series examining academic freedom and freedom of speech. Moderated by Keith Allred, executive director of the National Institute for Civil Discourse, these dialogues will employ evidence-based strategies and real-world scenarios to engage students, staff and faculty in meaningful discussions. By examining diverse perspectives, the series aims to strengthen our commitment to open inquiry.

Session 1

Free speech in polarized times: Healthy discourse in the classroom
Monday, Oct. 21, 3:30 - 5 p.m.

This session will explore how universities can balance free expression with university values. Panelists will discuss strategies for engaging in classroom discourse about challenging topics in ways that are both respectful and academically rigorous. The discussion will center on responses to hypothetical real-world scenarios involving free expression on college campuses.

Session 2

Navigating academic freedom and free speech on campus: Legal perspectives
Monday, Oct. 28, 3:30 - 5 p.m.

This session will cover the legal dimensions of free speech and academic freedom on campus. Topics include the distinction between free speech and academic freedom, the legality of campus protests and the specific obligations of public institutions. Panelists will discuss hypothetical real-world scenarios addressing challenging First Amendment issues that universities might face.

  • Alex Morey, vice president of Campus Advocacy, Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression 
  • Undergraduate and graduate student representatives
