Aging Experts to Address UArizona Living Healthy With Arthritis Virtual Conference

Three internationally recognized healthy aging experts will deliver the keynote address, “Protect, Prevent, Progress – Aging and Immunity, Disease Prevention, Behavior and Cognition,” at the 2022 Virtual Living Healthy With Arthritis Conference on Saturday, May 21, 9 a.m.-12:45 p.m.

Mindy Fain, MD, Janko Nikolich-Žugich, MD, PhD, and Kathleen Insel, PhD, RN, will present a three-pronged approach to addressing critical components in healthy aging in a series of Ted Talk-like presentations discussing the complexity of aging and immunity, disease treatment and prevention, behavior and cognition. They will share the latest discoveries impacting the senior population and highlight research advances, novel treatments and preventive approaches. 

About the speakers:

Mindy Fain, MD, is professor and interim chair of the Department of Medicine in the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson. She is co-director of the College of Medicine – Tucson’s Center on Aging, chief of the Division of Geriatrics, General Internal Medicine and Palliative Care, and holds the Anne and Alden Hart Endowed Chair in Medicine. Dr. Fain will address medical diagnoses that are more common in the aging population, advances in treatment and preventive measures.

Janko Nikolich-Žugich, MD, PhD, is Bowman Professor and chair of the Department of Immunobiology in the College of Medicine – Tucson, director of the University of Arizona Health Sciences Aegis Consortium, and co-director of the Center on Aging. He is a leading expert on the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the aging population. Dr. Nikolich-Žugich will speak about COVID-19 and what happens to the immune system as people age, including responses to infection.

Kathleen Insel, PhD, RN, is director of the University of Arizona Health Sciences strategic initiative “Innovations in Healthy Aging,” professor in the UArizona College of Nursing, chair of the Biobehavioral Health Science Division in the College of Nursing and associate director of strategies and development for the Center on Aging. Dr. Insel will discuss her most recent research on cognition and behavior in the senior population.

Other conference presentations include: “T’ai Chi for Health and Healing” and “Exercise for Arthritis and Healthy Aging.”

Hosted by the University of Arizona Arthritis Center, the conference will be delivered via livestream. Attendees may join all or some sessions based on interest.
