UArizona Skin Cancer Institute Presents 11th Annual Melanoma Walk

The Skin Cancer Institute at the University of Arizona Cancer Center will present the 11^th annual Melanoma Walk on Saturday, Oct. 30, on the UArizona Mall.

The event begins with skin screenings and spot checks from 2 to 4 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis. Visitors do not need to be registered for the walk to receive free screenings. Family- and pet-friendly activities for walkers, such as food, music, prizes, giveaways and a silent auction, begin at 3 p.m., with the walk following at 4:30 p.m.

Every year, the Melanoma Walk raises awareness about skin cancer while giving people the chance to come together in support of fighting and curing deadly melanoma skin cancer.

“We’re so lucky to have so many people supporting our important work in melanoma research, prevention, education, patient support and community outreach,” said Lisa Quale, a health educator at the Skin Cancer Institute.

Proceeds from the walk directly support melanoma research, community outreach, education and patient care in Arizona. The Skin Cancer Institute’s goal is to raise $50,000 to help fight melanoma.

Registration is $30 for adults and $15 for children ages 10-14. Children 9 and under can participate for free. Several teams have already started raising funds to fight melanoma.

Desert Toyota of Tucson, the presenting sponsor and a supporter of the walk since 2016, is donating $5,000, with Desert Toyota of Tucson employees raising $1,500, for a total $6,500.

“The walk is a powerful event full of hope and positivity,” said Skin Cancer Institute co-director Robin Harris, PhD, MPH. “We are grateful to all of our sponsors for their ongoing support and generosity.”

Founded in 2005, the Skin Cancer Institute at the UArizona Cancer Center is the only skin cancer organization of its kind that unites patient care, research, outreach and education into one entity. The Skin Cancer Institute serves as a model for community-based skin cancer research and care in the United States and relies solely on grants and donations for operation.
