Providing Care Where It’s Needed Most: Dr. Emma Goodstein Receives National Community Service Recognition Award

Finding purpose in her practice, Emma Goodstein, MD, chief resident of the family medicine residency at Banner – University Medical Center South, recently received the Association of American Medical Colleges Organization of Resident Representatives Community Service Recognition Award for 2019. The award is given annually to one resident physician who has contributed above and beyond the rigors of training to improve the local community.

Dr. Goodstein, who is a bilingual health care provider and plans on practicing family medicine in a rural area, has found her passion working with refugees and asylum seekers in Tucson.

“She has made a really big impact in the asylum-seeking population, which is one of the most vulnerable populations in our country,” said Sommer Aldulaimi, MD, associate director for the family medicine residency program at Banner – UMC South and Dr. Goodstein’s faculty advisor.

“It’s just important to be a part of your community, however you find a way to do that. For me it was through community service because that’s what makes me feel connected and makes me feel like I’m making a difference,” said Goodstein.
