Chronic Diseases of Aging in an Evolutionary Context

Presenter Details

Benjamin Trumble, MD, MSc

Dr. Trumble is an American anthropologist and evolutionary biologist specializing in human health, aging and endocrinology. He is a professor at the School of Human Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State University and a research scientist with the Institute of Human Origins. His work integrates anthropology, medicine and evolutionary theory to examine the evolutionary roots of chronic disease and aging in global contexts.

Dr. Trumble earned his bachelor's in anthropology and psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, followed by master's and doctorate degrees in anthropology from the University of Washington (PhD, 2012). His early fieldwork among Amazonian forager-horticulturalists shaped his long-term focus on evolutionary physiology and human life history. His research investigates how genetic, hormonal and immune processes interact with lifestyle and environment to influence chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, benign prostatic hyperplasia and Alzheimer’s dementia.

He is especially known for his work with the Bolivian Tsimane through the Tsimane Health and Life History Project, examining why subsistence populations experience remarkably low rates of heart disease and dementia compared with industrialized societies. Trumble has published widely in leading journals, including Science Advances, Nature Aging, Evolution, Medicine, Public Health and The Lancet. At ASU, he teaches evolutionary medicine and biological anthropology and mentors students in interdisciplinary research connecting evolutionary perspectives to modern public health challenges.
